Stepwise Water Splitting: Thermal H2 and Light-Induced O2 Liberation A sequence of reactions leading to thermal reduction of water with liberation of H2, and light-induced oxidation of water with liberation of O2, involving fully characterized mono-nuclear Ru(II) complexes, with overall retention of the metal oxidation state, has been demonstrated; O-O bond formation is intramolecular and involves a single metal center. Science 2009, 324, 74 Catalytic Dehydrogenative Coupling of Alcohols to Acetals Complex 4, which bears a non-planar acridine moiety, catalyzes in a neutral medium the unprecedented transformation of primary alcohols to acetals with the liberation of H2. In the presence of base, dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols to form esters takes place. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 3146
