Summer 2016 Training: All Things Media Related Engage students with Zoom, Kaltura, iMovie and all devices!

Presented By: Learning Technologies Team – supporting faculty through research, course design, technology implementation, classroom technology, video services and more. Catterson, Ph.D. Educational Technology Coordinator

What is all of this? How do I start?

First: ENGAGEMENT Using media creates engagement and a sense of belonging to students. Adding your voice to your class creates personalization and you become relatable. There are TONS of options for multimedia, start with something that you want to ENHANCE and then…choose a technology to try. Here are a few technologies LT purchased, recommends and supports for you to begin the engagement process with your students.

Zoom http://www.emporiastate.zoom.com Zoom offers many tools such as: lecture capture, recording, live video conferencing and more!

Upcoming Meetings – Personal Meeting Room

Students can join in (live) http://www.zoom.us – to join OR students can join in Canvas: Students will be directed to Zoom.us and then they will be prompted to enter a meeting ID. You can provide the ID to them in an announcement or in a module. You can also place the ID in your course syllabus. Great for office hours!

Schedule a meeting

Zoom Application on Desktop Tools: Start a session without video (audio only). You could do this with a live audience or perhaps just an audio recording that gives feedback on an assignment. Start with video. Same as above, but with video and audio. I use this for grading papers – verbal feedback is an excellent alternative. Schedule and Join a meeting in a click.

Benefits/Advantages of Zoom: Allows live, one-to-one or one-to-many conversations with students and instructor. Allows for external guest speakers to join in. Can be used on mobile devices, tablets, laptops and desktop computers. Can record every session and make available to select groups. Great for recording screen capture and making instructor-comments to student assignments

Panopto Panopto includes a video content management system for uploading, managing and sharing all of Emporia State’s video and audio files. It’s a centralized, secure place for recorded lectures, flipped classroom videos, campus events, and more. You can think of Panopto as a mini-YouTube, only without advertisements and all the distractions!

Accessing Panopto http://vulcan.emporia.edu Sign in using “Canvas Integrator” Use your ESU credentials

2. 3. 1. Download the Recorder and a shortcut will be placed on your desktop; this will allow a different interface for you to record in. (Shown later) Selecting Create will allow you to record a new session, upload media, create a webcast, schedule a recording or build a session (combining videos together). All sessions are total recordings that are NOT categorized and placed into folders. Selecting “My Folders” will allow you to see your classes (a folder for each class).

Panopto Recorder (Downloaded) EASY METHOD! Panopto Recorder (Downloaded) 1. Select the folder you want the recording to be placed in. Select the video, audio and quality settings. What do you want to capture? 2. 3.

So now what? So, what do you do now that you have a recording? How does the recording go into the course? There are actually TWO ways this can be accomplished (plus some….)

Sharing Panopto Videos Add the “Panopto Videos” link in your course. This can be done through the settings menu.

More Sharing…

Embedding Video Directly in Modules

Kaltura Kaltura is another application you can use to record the screen and create video interactions. It does NOT allow for live conferencing (like Zoom), however it is very similar to Panopto. There are a couple of ways you can access.

Implementing Kaltura Upload your content by selecting “Add New” Once your media is uploaded, you can create links to it in the Navigation menu. “Media Gallery” – Any videos uploaded and shared (Mini YouTube in your course) “My Media” – Videos created with the Kaltura “Webcam Recording” tool.

Using Canvas for Media? You Bet! You don’t have to use Panopto OR Kaltura, Canvas has their own media element…let’s explore.
