2017/18 Overview and Highlights we have achieved much together we will make a difference 2017/18 Overview and Highlights

2017/18 Overview and Highlights Tribute to our staff Without our fantastic, dedicated staff, we couldn’t achieve everything we do. How did we do? Improved or sustained performance in most of our indicators (notably waiting times for elective treatment and emergency, ambulance delays, therapies and diagnostics) but there is much more to do. What about our finances? End of financial year deficit of £69m. Challenges continue but working hard to improve and balance our finances within the year. Working towards Integrated Medium Term Plan (IMTP) for 2019/20. Draft Annual Plan in place for 2018/19. ‘Targeted intervention’ support from Welsh Government welcomed and the opportunities that has created, e.g. Turnaround programme. Focused recruitment plans, particularly medical and nursing, led to a reduction in variable pay spend of £9m compared with 2016/17. We spent over £1m supporting a wide range of charitable and health related activities. Staff - without their commitment and hard work, we couldn’t achieve everything we do. often above and beyond their normal roles and at times of significant pressure, e.g. during in the winter months. Performance - we are an improving organisation, constantly making efforts to better our performance across all areas of healthcare. In the last year, we have improved or sustained performance in the majority of our indicators, particularly in waiting times for elective treatment, therapies and diagnostics. We do, however, acknowledge that we have much more to do and so we remain focused on improving those areas where we need to do better.

Over 1,000 members in our Siarad Iechyd/Talking Health scheme. Our Annual Report highlights many new developments, innovations and award- winning successes. Here are just some of our key activities over the year: Invested £16.9m in improving our hospital and community services (including Bronglais Hospital front of house and the fire lift; anti-ligature works; information management and technology, and medical equipment). In January, began implementing our award-winning Transforming Mental Health Services programme (Consultation Institute ‘best practice’). The Big Conversation (Summer 2017) – public engagement on our clinically led Transforming Clinical Services programme. Currently in formal public consultation on three proposals, with outcome to be presented to Board in September 2018. Recruitment campaigns/events undertaken for clinical staff with some success and more joint working with universities. At the end of 2017 we had: 28 more AHPs; 91 more registered nurses (the only health board in Wales to see an increase in the latter); 89 newly qualified nurses taking substantive posts; 65 more senior medical staff (double the 2015 figure). Over 1,000 members in our Siarad Iechyd/Talking Health scheme. Recruited 161 new health volunteers. Staff - without their commitment and hard work, we couldn’t achieve everything we do. often above and beyond their normal roles and at times of significant pressure, e.g. during in the winter months. Performance - we are an improving organisation, constantly making efforts to better our performance across all areas of healthcare. We do, however, acknowledge that we have much more to do and so we remain focused on improving those areas where we need to do better.

Our recycling rate improved for the 10th consecutive year, now at 46%. 62 individual staff members and teams received recognition through the Chair’s Employee/Team of the Month award. Increased the number of bronze and silver Investors in Carers awards with our GP surgeries, pharmacies and health settings. Launched bilingual IAWN website for people with mild/moderate mental health problems. Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth top hospital in Wales for the quality of care provided for emergency laparotomy patients. Our Research & Development Team has had its highest activity level on record and has more people in respiratory trials than any other health board in Wales and active teams in diabetes and breast cancer. Flu vaccination - successful staff campaign with 60% vaccination rate exceeded (13.6% increase on last year and the best improvement rate in Wales). Our Board members won the Leadership award at the Welsh Government’s ‘More Than Just Words’ showcase event for leading by example in using and promoting the Welsh language in the workplace. Staff - without their commitment and hard work, we couldn’t achieve everything we do. often above and beyond their normal roles and at times of significant pressure, e.g. during in the winter months.
