Friday 9/21/18 Notebook Entry: Write 3-5 adjectives that describe scientists. (Remember an adjective is a word that describes a person, place or thing) Display at start of class. Give 5 minutes to answer. Have students share answers to notebook entry in their table group for 2 minutes. Have one person from each table share out 1-2 adjectives they heard in their discussion.

Scientist Match Up Activity Purpose: To see what ideas we have about who scientists are as people and what types of careers they have. You will work in groups of 2 or 3. If sitting in a group of 4 then you will work with your hip neighbor. If in a group of 5 then one side makes a group of 3. Explain intro to activity. Please put the job lists in page protectors so kids do not write on them. They can use the fine tip expo markers in the blue pencil pouch to mark off the jobs as they assign them. Sometimes they don’t wipe off easily so they may need to spray a tissue with water from the pink water bottle on the front counter to get the expo off. The photo pages need to go in sheet protectors as well.

3 Rounds to Correctly Match the Persons Picture to their Job Round 1: Guess based only your observation of their photo. Use the photos and the Job List Chart to match the person to their job. Record on your answers in the first column of the answer page for your team. Pass out materials. Explain round 1. Give 10 minutes or less.

Display anytime they are working.

Rounds 2 and 3 Round 2 Round 3 I will read one clue about each person in the photos. Mark your choices for profession in column 2. I will read one more additional clue. Mark your choices for profession in column 3. See Answer key page for teacher for clues. Read only 1 clue in round 2. Give pause time in between for them to process. Read the other clue in round 3. Once completed with round 3 let whole group tables compare their answers. Then share with the class the correct answers. If time allows lead a discussion on why they chose their answers. Ultimately this intended to demonstrate that scientists have many unexpected skills and personality traits that not fit student stereotypes of scientists.
