What is A.L.I.C.E.? ALICE provides us with a plan if we are faced with a dangerous situation or an immediate threat ALICE is about having options and being able to make choices to stay safe Schools are SAFE and we all can do our part to keep them that way! ALICE is a plan—or ideas Can be comforting to have a plan, helps us to know what to do
A.L.I.C.E. Stands for… Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate ALICE is an acronym. THIS IS A PLAN. A WAY FOR US TO REMEMBER WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY. CAN BE USED IN ANY ORDER It’s a plan so we can be prepared with ideas!
Alert If you see or hear anything suspicious/weird, ALERT others immediately Tell an adult Keep telling until you are heard Stop, Look, Listen Weird sounds that you don’t usually hear at school (balloon popping, fireworks) Mention if another student threatens to bring something to school, you have a DUTY to ALERT adults at school or at home so we can help.
Lockdown Doors locked Lights off, quiet Spread out around the room May also barricade the door (anything and everything pushed/stacked in front of the door) How to Barricade BARRICADE Explain “Lockdown” and ”Barricade”. May be different: may only lockdown, may lockdown AND barricade. Barricade: EVERYONE helps to push and stack anything they see in front of the door. Anything you see, push and put in front of the door.
Inform Share and receive information Be specific: give as much information as possible! Location (Pearl Creek, classroom number) Description Share any threats Call 911 Explain that if you are LOCKING down, if you think to call 911, DO IT. Give as much detail as possible.
Counter Things you can do if someone breaks past the barricade: Keep moving around the room Throw things at intruder Yell and make loud noises Throw anything at the intruder. Look around the classroom right now—what are some things you could pick up and throw?
Evacuate If you can—get out of the building Make decision(s) based on information you have Check the doors Check the windows Run out and away from the building Swiftly evacuate and scatter If possible, EVACUATE! Run to the woods Run away from the school Do not run in a straight line —zig zag If you can, run to the May’s house (Pearl Creek’s safe reunion location)

You should spread out around the space and possibly prepare to counter. What does the “I” in ALICE stand for? Inform. Get Information out about what is happening in the building. Call 911, text, call, get as much information out as you can (address, where people are located, etc).
Pop Quiz, Cont’d… What does the “C” in ALICE stand for? Counter. Find objects to throw at intruder, yell, run around, create distractions. Look around this classroom. Name 3 things that can be thrown at an intruder. Anything else? ANYTHING and EVERYTHING can be used to counter! Throw anything you can find. What does the “E” in ALICE stand for? Evacuate. If possible, this should be your first move. Get out ASAP and run away from the building. True or False: When evacuating the building, do so quickly and run in a zig zag pattern, spreading out as we go. True. True or False: It is important to stay with a group of people as you evacuate. False. You should run and spread out. We will find you later. If possible, follow the to our Rally Point (The May House). You will see a puffin sign.
Scenario You hear a classmate say they are going to bring a weapon to school. What do you do?
Scenario You are in your classroom and hear an odd noise that you’ve never heard before at school. What do you do?
Scenario You hear over the PA that there is a dangerous situation at school. It is happening at the other end of the building. What can you do? Check windows and doors, look to evacuate. Scatter as you go, zig zag and run away from building.
Remember… We do things every day to keep ourselves safe. ALICE provides us with a plan, and tools, we can use to keep ourselves safe in the event of a threat.

You may also schedule a time to meet with Mrs. Bartusch to ask questions in private or to process any uncomfortable/upsetting feelings you may have. Encourage students to share the information they learned with family members. Encourage students to share their honest feelings about the information they learned today, so we can help them process it.
