What is poetry? One of the three major literary genres in which authors use words in special ways
Genre in which words are usually written in verse to inspire strong feeling Divided into 3 main categories: narrative, lyrical and dramatic
Narrative Poetry Meant to tell a story Many stories are about heroes, places in time or interesting people Narrative = Story
Lyrical Poetry has a musical, emotional mood Often sounds like a song Uses words that express feelings and thoughts about the world Many lyrical poems are about love- but can be about anything that stirs the emotions
DRAMATIC POETRY Written in verse and meant to be spoken Tell about something in a descriptive way Often focuses on extreme or stressful moments or relationships in life (death, tragedy, etc.) Most are meant to be preformed in front of an audience (a play or an opera)
