Analysing audiences responses Survey on Survey monkey

Question 1 – What is your most profound genre of music? As you can see the ‘Pop’ genre got 56% of the responses and the Indie genre got 52%. I'm not surprised as the pop genre dictates the UK charts, however Indie music got the achieved high responses and is currently on the rise in the music industry. I think if we (my partner and i) captured both elements of the pop and indie genre, it would appeal to more of a mass audience. The conventions for each genre are quite similar however we are leaning towards a more of indie style, as we feel this would be ideal for the type of music video we would like to produce, and the fact the song we ideally want to use is form the indie/rock genre.

Question 2 – What is your age? We asked a range of people form all different ages to give us an Age appropriate result. We found that the most common age of the people asked where 15+. Therefore we will be aiming our product at 15+ as our music videos will contain some disturbing and dramatic themes and therefore would not be appropriate for younger viewers.

Question 3 – What is your gender 52% of the responses are male and 34% are Female. With the larger percentage of people we asked being males, we could perhaps introduce the ‘male Gaze theory’ especially as this is common to see in lots of pop music videos. However, with our genre this wouldn’t be appropriate and I do not want to create a negative representation of young people by doing so.

Question 4 – How often do you listen to music channels per week? This chart shows that the largest majority of people do not watch music channels. This could be due to the fact they tend to watch mainly Tv shows not necessary music channels. This may be because most people seem to use their Phones to listen to music and watch music videos. However we can also see that 26% of the people watch music channels 1-2 days a week this. This could indicate that some people do prefer to watch music channels.

Question 5 – How often do you watch music video's per week? These results show that most people tend to watch music videos quite often during the week. This maybe due to the fact that people use converged tech such as there iPhone’s and laptops, to watch music videos on multi media platforms such as YouTube. YouTube is often an app young people spend a lot of time on, watching videos. The fact YouTube allows you to subscribe to your favourite music artists channel, and let’s you know about any new song released by them (through notifications on your phone) is one of the main factors for why young people spend a lot of time on this app. Plus you are easily able to watch a lot of music videos at any time. YouTube also has a section for music, where you can see the top trending music videos at the moment, this is again another reason why I feel young people watch a lot of music videos during the week.

Question 6 – who’s your favourite music artist? From the results, you can see a vast variety of all different types of artists and genres. The most popular artist was ‘Eminem’, 2 people replied saying he was there favourite artists however ‘Rap’ wasn’t the most common genre, Hip Hop was with five votes. This clearly implies that the youth of todays society has a keen interest in the style and music, that Hip Hop artist produce. Overall, these results do not show the level of detail we expected.

Questions 7 –What do you enjoy in a music video? From the mixed results we found that, the reason why most people enjoy certain music video's is because of the effective editing and powerful narrative's that some music videos show. People seem to prefer a well made big budget music video, with well suited costumes and locations, compared to a lower budget music video.

Question 8- Do you prefer, Lyrical, narrative contemporary? From these result we can clearly see that the favourite type of music video is Narrative. This is good, as we will now be creating a narrative music video, with contemporary elements too. This means our music video will appeal and attract a wider audience and will allow them to possibly relate to the story line (Narrative). Adding some contemporary elements will allow us to make our music video more divers and interesting, rather than just traditionally sticking to one specific type.
