3.1 Building a Density Column James Seymour

Purpose The purpose of this lab was to build a density column and predict how solids will behave when they are placed in a density column.

Hypothesis I believe that

Materials 3 Graduated Cylinders Balance Beaker Colored Water Corn Syrup Vegetable Oil Copper Cylinder Nylon Spacer Paper towel Data Sheet

Procedure Determine the density of the three liquids. Accurately measure the mass of both empty graduated cylinders. Accurately measure the mass of the graduated cylinder and water. 3. Calculate the mass of the liquid. 4. Measure the volume (25mL) of the three liquids. 5. Calculate the density using the mass/volume formula.

Procedure 6. Look at the density of three liquids and predict what will happen when you mix the three liquids. Fill in the diagram on the prediction cylinder on the data sheet. 7. Pour 25 mL of vegetable oil into the cylinder with corn syrup. Add an additional 25 mL of colored water to the cylinder. 8. Fill in the observation cylinder on the data sheet. Answer the following questions. 9. Predict what will happen when you drop the copper cylinder and the nylon spacer into the column. Draw prediction on prediction cylinder. 10. Drop the copper cylinder , followed by the nylon spacer. Record results on observation cylinder.

Observations/Results Tape your data sheet into your lab report and that will take care of your results. Make sure it is completed fully.

Conclusion Write a paragraph explaining the outcome of the lab. Was hypothesis right or wrong. If wrong explain why. Explain what you learned from this lab and if you met the objective. Any questions you may have. Things you may want to find out in another lab.
