Gloucestershire Voices BGSW Area Team engaged with Gloucestershire Voices who are set up to speak on behalf of the wider group of people with learning disabilities http://youtu.be/YEQDQ_Snkbo http://youtu.be/KjL7erwx4iM Knowing the importance of engaging with patients… we wanted to involve people with learning disabilities from very early on in the work we were doing Would have been difficult to have had a blank sheet to start with, so it was useful to build upon the good work that had already been done Gave Gloucestershire Voices the documents beforehand so that they could prepare Set out the process in very clear steps Set the scene Facilitated small groups (keeping people on track, role play) 1.5 hours Fun, not scary and very useful! Pulled information together afterwards We wanted to make it real… not tokenism! NHS | Presentation to Best Practice Network – 29th November 2013

Documentation Cherry picked best bits and created a draft Easy Read FFT, Patient Guide and NHS Staff Guide NHS | Presentation to Best Practice Network – 29th November 2013

My Life, My Choice Thames Valley Area Team engaged with My Life, My Choice - a self-advocacy organisation run by and for people with learning difficulties in Oxfordshire Repeated the process with the experts by experience http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRK9ra8dVIQ NHS | Presentation to Best Practice Network – 29th November 2013

Approach We amended the documentation and then worked with speech and language therapists, clinicians etc. to ask for their feedback and to validate what we had learnt Then we widened the feedback to staff, champions, experts that work with people with learning disabilities for their feedback Thames Valley AT & BGSW AT collated the work together and produced final draft versions of all of the documents These documents along with the guidance and an evidence based report will be presented at a round table event so that this can be tested with early adopter sites in the new year NHS | Presentation to Best Practice Network – 29th November 2013
