Homework Monday, April 08, 2019 Play Outside!! Find a group shoebox Objective: YWBAT analyze mass of building materials. Drill: What advantage do flexible pipes have over rigid metal pipes during an earthquake? Homework Play Outside!! Find a group shoebox

Answer Flexible pipes twist and bend more readily than metal pipes, which tend to snap when subjected to significant seismic tremors.

Did you know…? Engineers have devised giant shock absorbers for buildings. The shock absorbers contain a ferrofluid solution that becomes rigid in a magnetic field. When an earthquake occurs, a computer controls electromagnets in the shock absorbers to damp the vibrations.

Conclusion Answer Cross-braces counteract pressure that pushes and pulls at the side of a building during an earthquake.
