Teacher Tips for Success In first grade, the ability to listen and follow directions is a key to academic success. We teach children to listen with their “whole bodies” to ensure that they are getting the most out of instruction time. Children are not multitaskers, so if their eyes, hands, feet, or mouths are engaged in other activities, their ears and brains are not able to focus on listening. Failure to listen often affects academic progress. Our first graders are learning the skills and self-control needed to be great learners.
