Learning objectives Reading the Call for Relevant Details Engaging a Faculty Mentor/Asking for Recommendations Defining the Bare Bones of your Proposal Disciplinary Specific Proposal Strategies

READING THE CALL FOR RELEVANT DETAILS undergraduateresearch.duke.edu

DETAILS OF GREATEST IMPORTANCE AM I ELIGIBLE? WHEN IS THE APPLICATION DEADLINE? WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS OF THE GRANTING AGENCY? WHAT KIND OF MATERIALS DO I NEED TO COMPILE OR CREATE? WHAT KIND OF MENTOR SUPPORT IS REQUIRED?

ENGAGING A FACULTY MENTOR GREAT TIPS CAN BE FOUND https://undergraduateresearch.duke.edu/tips-contacting-mentors

BE PROACTIVE! Review the requirements for mentorship from grant application. Pay particular attention to faculty rank and disciplinary background requirements.  Does the call require them to supervise the project from beginning to end? Does the call just ask for their verification and support of your previous work? Know these answers before reaching out with your request. Make sure there is ample time (3 weeks at least) between the time you make your request and the deadline for their commitment and/or letter.

DEFINING THE BARE BONES OF A PROPOSAL IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM/QUESTION YOU ARE INVESTIGATING. DISCUSS THE MOTIVATION BEHIND THE RESEARCH. ARTICULATE YOUR APPROACH AND YOUR AIMS/GOALS. ARGUE WHY YOU ARE THE PERSON TO DO THIS WORK.

Problem/QUESTION What does this research do? For a disciplinary field, for a community, for your own intellectual trajectory. What is already being done in this vein? Are you building on a tradition or innovating a new idea?

Motivation Why should the grantors care about this research? Why are you pursuing this research? Who does this research benefit?

approach What are you doing? What is your approach & why are you taking that approach?

Specific aims 1-2 things you aim to achieve with your project How do these relate to scholarship that already exists in your field?

Why you? Why now? What makes YOU the perfect person to undertake this project? (is it doable by you?) Why is NOW a good time for this work to be done? Be sure to consider the WHERE of your work. Why is that the place or context in which it needs to happen?

URS – the Deans Summer Research Fellowship The Deans Summer Research Fellowship (DSRF) – Open to ALL disciplines Requirement of minimum of 3 weeks full-time research during the summer Maximum of $3,000 towards costs Relatively competitive C:\Users\spr22\Documents\DSRF Application Preview 2019_0.pdf

Duke Institutional Review Board (IRB) Campus Institutional Review Board IRB staff are here to help you navigate the process for submitting research protocols to the Campus IRB. We provide one- on-one consultations to faculty and students, and are available to provide training, seminars, and workshops. Our site includes request for approval forms, guides, samples, and other resources grouped by topic. Call us if you have any questions. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has issued revisions to the Common Rule (45 CFR 46), which went into effect, January 21, 2019. Information presented on this page will be updated to reflect those changes in the coming days. Before You Begin Does your study need IRB review? Should you submit your protocol to the Campus IRB or a Duke Health IRB? Are you collaborating with other institutions and organizations? Will you collect sensitive individually identifiable information? Questions? Schedule a consultation with IRB Staff
