Essential Question: What are the parts and features of a computer?

What is a computer? An electronic device that receives data, processes data, stores data, and produces a result (output)

Types of Personal Computers Desktop computer: designed to be used on a desktop Laptop computer: portable computer designed to be small enough and light enough to be used on your lap Tablet computer: portable computer primarily operated by touching the screen rather than using a physical keyboard

Computer Components: Hardware Hardware – the physical equipment of the computer system that you can see and touch

Monitor Speakers Keyboard Mouse CD ROM Drive Computer Case (Processor inside) Floppy Disk Drive Speakers Keyboard USB Drive Mouse

Input Devices Webcam Mouse Keyboard Microphone Joystick Scanner Used to put information into the computer Allow you to communicate with your computer Webcam Mouse Keyboard Microphone Joystick Scanner

Output Devices Speakers Monitor – produces soft copy output Projector Send information out of the computer Allow the computer to communicate with the user Monitor – produces soft copy output Projector Printer – produces hard copy output Headphones

Processing Device Central Processing Unit (CPU) – known as the heart or “brain” of the computer, responsible for processing the information that has been entered into the computer

Storage Devices Internal Storage- External Storage- Allows you to store information inside of the computer Hard drive: Allows the fastest access to information RAM (Random Access Memory) – temporary storage ROM (Read Only Memory) – long-term storage External Storage- Allows you to use devices to store information outside of the computer Floppy disks CD-ROMs (Compact Disc Read Only Memory) CD-RW (Compact Disc Read and Write) DVDs (Digital Video Disc) USB/Flash drives

The Information Processing Cycle

What Does IPOS Stand For? Input Processing Output Storage

What Happens During The IPOS Cycle? Input when information is entered into the computer; the computer receives information Processing when the computer processes the information that has been entered Output when information leaves the computer Storage when information is stored to be used later

How the IPOS Cycle Works: Input Storage Processing Storage Output
