English I Lesson Plans Third Nine Weeks Unit 3: Romeo and Juliet Overview: Students continue their study of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet as they complete their close read and annotation of the prologue, explore thematic topics introduced, and read Act I focusing on conflicts the characters face. In addition, to support their understanding of the play, students will view two different versions of Act I and compare.. Week of Feb 18 – Feb 22

Monday, February 18 BELLRINGER: Today we will: You will need: Take a Guiding Questions handout from the top tray and answer questions 1-3. Review Last week, we read and annotated Friar Lawrence’s soliloquy from Act II, Scene 3 and we completed a timed writing exercise analyzing the language and structure used. Today, we will continue to analyze the language as we read Act II, Scene 4 of the play.

Preparing for Socratic Seminar THIS THURSDAY Read assigned readings carefully, answer guiding questions, and take notes. You will use these when you participate in the seminar. If you want to prepare some questions and comments in advance, you can also write them down. You don’t have to memorize anything. Today we will: Participate in a Socratic style discussion regarding young love, forbidden love, and the possibility of love at first sight, etc. You will need: Preparation Packet #1 Student Roles and Rules Sentence Stems Scoring Guide Partner Observation Notes

Preparing for Socratic Seminar Read assigned readings carefully, answer guiding questions, and take notes. You will use these when you participate in the seminar. If you want to prepare some questions and comments in advance, you can also write them down. You don’t have to memorize anything. Look over the sentence stems and assessment guide so that you can stay focused the day of the seminar.

Rules of the Seminar Every student must participate in the seminar a minimum of two but no more than five times. Look at other students when you are speaking. When you want to speak, you have to do it without raising your hand or interrupting another speaker. If you don’t understand, ask a question. No side conversations. Respond to others—don’t just share your ideas unless it’s the right time. Stay focused on the topic and Guiding Questions. Refer to the text (s) as much as possible. If you don’t agree, express yourself respectfully by asking follow-up questions, asking for evidence, or stating alternatives.

Let’s Begin! Introduction Swept up by passion, Romeo and Juliet together helped shape our modern conception of romantic love. Their feelings for each other trump all else— family, loyalty, and prudence—and any obstacle to their union must be overcome. Essential Questions Is there such a thing as “love at first sight”? Do teenagers experience real love? Do young people’s brains cause them to make irrational decisions?

Act II Quiz ASSESSMENT This is an assessment and counts as a quiz grade. You will have only this class period to complete the quiz. You must do your own work. When you are finished, bring your test to the teacher and you may work on your Academic Vocabulary Part Two or any other incomplete assignments for Romeo and Juliet..

Constructed Response Respond to the following question: Romeo acts somewhat impulsively when it comes to decisions about love. How might his age factor into his seemingly irrational behavior? Be sure to include evidence from the play and the readings. Must be typed in MLA format using rules of formal writing. Due Monday!
