Pie Graphs 500 Toys Sold Reading Pie Graphs: 6% 25% 22% 8% 4% 35% Stuffed Animals Board Games Computer Games Puzzles Action Figures Dolls Reading Pie Graphs: The title gives information about the pie graph. This title shows that 500 toys were sold. The legend shows the categories for the pie graph. The categories on this pie graph show the percentages of each category.

Interpret Pie Graphs How many puzzles were sold? 500 Toys Sold 6% 25% 22% 8% 4% 35% Stuffed Animals Board Games Computer Games Puzzles Action Figures Dolls How many board games and computer games were sold? How many more action figures were sold than dolls? Compare the number of stuffed animals sold to the combined number of puzzles, board games, and dolls sold. To find the number of toys sold for each category, multiply the number of toys sold by the percentage for the category.

Interpret Pie Graphs How many puzzles were sold? 20 500 Toys Sold 6% 25% 22% 8% 4% 35% Stuffed Animals Board Games Computer Games Puzzles Action Figures Dolls How many board games and computer games were sold? 215 How many more action figures were sold than dolls? 80 Compare the number of stuffed animals sold to the combined number of puzzles, board games, and dolls sold. To find the number of toys sold for each category, multiply the number of toys sold by the percentage for the category. 7% more stuffed animals were sold, or 35 more than the others combined.

Line graphs show change over time. Mark’s Cell Phone Minutes Each point on this graph is an ordered pair (x, y) that represents (week, number of minutes). Reading a Line Graph: To find the number of cell phone minutes for Week 1, read up from the horizontal or x-axis and left to the vertical or y-axis. Number of Minutes 350 300 250 200 150 100 50 1 2 3 4 5 Week Mark’s Cell Phone Minutes The number of minutes for Week 1 appears to be about 160.

In which week did Mark use 300 cell phone minutes? Write a statement that describes the trend shown in this graph. What prediction can you make about cell phone minutes in Week 6?

Week 5 Write a statement that describes the trend shown in this graph. Sample: There was a slight dip in cell phone minutes used in Week 3, but in general the number of cell phone minutes used keeps increasing. What prediction can you make about cell phone minutes in Week 6? Sample: The minutes used will probably be more than 300.

Reading a Double Line Graph: Double Line Graphs Use the legend to distinguish data sets. In this graph, the number of Reading a Double Line Graph: miles Anya and Kip walked are represented by blue and yellow lines. To compare the number of miles Kip and Anya walked in July, find July on the horizontal axis and read up. Number of Miles 70 60 50 40 30 20 10 April May June July August Month Miles Walked Anya Kip The yellow line is lower than the blue line, so Kip walked fewer miles than Anya.

Double Line Graphs Who walked the most miles in April? Number of Miles 70 60 50 40 30 20 10 April May June July August Month Miles Walked Anya Kip Who walked the most miles in April? Who walked the greatest number of miles in one month? What month was that? Who shows the least variation in the number of miles walked each month? Between which two months is the greatest increase in the number of miles Kip walked?

In this graph, yellow and purple Reading a Double Bar Graph: bars represent the scores Mick and Jasmine achieved playing Space Warp. To compare the number of points in Game 1, look at the heights of the two bars. The purple bar is higher than the yellow bar, so Jasmine scored more points in Game 1 than Mick.
