Energy in the kitchen The aim of this lesson is to enable children to understand how electrical energy is used in their everyday lives. The specific focus of this activity is on common items that are found in the kitchen. These slides can be used to promote discussion regarding which of the items use electrical energy and which do not. Through discussing and reflecting on the different scenarios in this lesson the children will be applying and developing the following skills of working scientifically - Observing Predicting Analysing (sorting and classifying) Recording and Communicating

What uses electricity? In this activity the children discuss whether or not 4 common items found in the kitchen use electrical energy. Name the 4 items you see electric oven teapot kitchen tools electric kettle Following discussion on each item, children predict which items use electricity. Go to next slide to reveal the answers.

Were your predictions correct? Do you agree / disagree with the answers?

What uses electricity? In this activity the children discuss whether or not 4 further common items found in the kitchen use electrical energy. Name the items washing machine plates fridge saucepans Following discussion on each item, children predict which items use electricity. Go to next slide to reveal the answers.

Were your predictions correct? Do you agree / disagree with the answers?

Guess the item Based on previous activities, children guess the item hidden behind the shape. Clues: Shape of item Tick or X indicates if the item uses electricity Go to next page to reveal the answers.

Were your predictions correct?

Sorting and Classifying Invite children to decide which items belong to which container - use electricity or not. Go to next page to reveal the answers.

Were your predictions correct?
