Welcome to P1 Maths Active Start 18.12.18

Addition in P1 Primary one children will begin addition in class after the Christmas holidays Today will show you some addition strategies we teach in school to help you support your child at home Addition using concrete materials helps children to visualise the numbers in the beginning stages

Addition using concrete materials at home

Addition using Concrete – Pictorial – Abstract in school Using the physical objects to show the two groups being added then counting how many altogether. This can be using any physical objects at home. Showing the two groups using a pictorial representation. This is the beginning step of encouraging pupils to show their working and explain their thinking. Adding two numbers by counting in their head or knowing off by heart.

Addition at home Use mathematical terms such as add, addition, plus, altogether, total Use any available concrete materials to show the two objects and count how many together Move onto putting the largest number in your head and the smallest number on your fingers and counting on to find the total If your child finds something tricky, don’t be afraid to get the concrete materials back out By the end of P1 it is great for pupils to know their number bonds to 10 off by heart. This builds a secure foundation to apply in more complex concepts.
