Aim To read an extract from a pre-1914 text and understand its social and historical context. Success Criteria To explore what life was like for people living pre-1914. To make notes on a famous pre-1914 author. To begin to explore a pre-1914 text.

Life Long Ago In your groups, answer the following questions about life in the UK in the era you have been given: What did people eat? What did people wear? What was considered a luxury? What did people do to entertain themselves? How did people get around? What did people believe? Any other information? AD Pre 1000 1000 - 1400 1400 - 1600 1600 - 1800 1800 - 1914

Into the Uknown This half term we will be studying a unit of work called Into The Unknown. We will be looking at extracts from novels, plays and poems from pre-1914 literature. All of the works we will be studying have a theme of the unknown – whether that is mysterious creatures, places or events. Every time we study a new author, you can fill them in on your Literature Timeline.

Now add Arthur Conan Doyle to you timeline! Sherlock Holmes Use your Tweetsheet to take notes. Remember, you can only use ten words for every note, so you need to keep them short and to the point! The Sherlock Holmes stories were written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a Scottish doctor who lived in Portsmouth. Conan Doyle lived from 1859 to 1930 and wrote the Sherlock Holmes stories from 1887 to 1927. He wrote four Sherlock Holmes novels and 56 short stories featuring the detective. In 1893, Conan Doyle killed off the character so that he could concentrate on more serious writing, but public outcry forced him to resurrect Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is an eccentric detective with a passion for facts and logic. His stories are mostly narrated by Doctor Watson, his friend and sidekick, who takes it upon himself to create a ‘casebook’ of their exploits. There have been many spin-offs and dramatisations inspired by the detective. Now add Arthur Conan Doyle to you timeline!

‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ ‘The Hound Of The Baskervilles’ was first published in a magazine in serial form, between 1901 and 1902. It is the third Sherlock Holmes novel. Read the extract from the climax of the novel, where Holmes and Watson finally confront and kill the beast. Can you highlight the words or phrases which describe what the hound looks like? Using the words and phrases you have highlighted, draw a picture of the hound. Now annotate your picture with the quotations you have highlighted from the text.

Life in Conan Doyle’s Time Think back to what we found out about 1800-1914 in our starter. Why do you think the hound may have been more scary for Conan Doyle’s readers than it is to us today?

Your Homework As part of this unit of work, you will be producing a research project for homework. Each week, you will have a different task to complete. Your project can be on any of the following pre-1914 writers: Jane Austen Emily Bronte Lewis Carroll Geoffrey Chaucer Daniel Defoe Charles Dickens Thomas Hardy Mary Shelley Percy Bysshe Shelley Jonathan Swift Use your homework sheet to schedule and complete your homework each week.
