Practical tasks, games and ‘real-life’ challenges SCITT Day 10 Practical tasks, games and ‘real-life’ challenges

Today we will… explore probability as an extension of activities with predicting, reasoning and testing; consider the role of mathematical learning through games;

Noughts and Crosses Just to get you thinking!! Top tips? Strategies? 3x3 4x4

Move any 4 to form 3 squares

Remove any 4 to form 4 triangles

Add 5 to form 4 identical shapes

Add 8 to form 4 identical shapes

Digit cards (i) You will need one set of 0 to 9 digit cards And a series of ‘challenge statements’ a number greater than 50 an even number a multiple of 10 as near to 75 as you can a number less than 10 Use the digit cards to try to make numbers matching each card. Each card may only be used once. Make up another list of challenges to challenge your table

Digit Cards (ii) 5 4 7 1 6 2 9 8 3 You will need 1 set of 1 to 9 cards Shuffle the cards and lay them in a line face up on the table You must try to make a continuous number sentence starting at the first number and finishing with the last, using only addition and subtraction, and having a total as near to 10 as you can 5 4 7 1 6 2 9 8 3

Strategy Games Counters – designing a competition Maths 2000 ‘Board games’

Dominoes What mathematics can I play with a set of dominoes? The original… Maltese Cross Odds and evens Pairs Number Hurdles Fault Lines

Games for thinking Ideas for adaptations? Target 24 – in Pairs Use any numbers from 1 to 10 (once and once only) to add cumulatively. The player that makes ‘24’ wins. Ideas for adaptations?

Mathematical Games Share your games… What was the intended learning objective? Does the game support that learning intention? How could the game be adapted?
