Veteran’s mental health in Puerto Rico: considerations and initiatives

Challenges of the Veterans Population in Puerto Rico Data from the National Allicance on Mental Illness (NAMI) suggests that Hispanic Vietnam veterans, especially Puerto Rican Vietnam Veterans, have a higher risk for PTSD and experience more severe PTSD symptoms. Of the 93,260 registered veterans, 29,853 are Vietnam Veterans Military sexual trauma in female veterans who are disproportionately represented in comparison with male veterans. Of the 93,260 registered veterans, only 5,331 are female. Despite the presence of VA facilities in Puerto Rico, there are major challenges in terms of service and resources. One of the areas of major concerns is with regards to treatment for mental health conditions.
