Warm – Up On your white board, model the following equation: 2x – 4 = 6 = x = 1 = -1

Now… Time for Simple Algebra 

x + 4 = -2 Modeling Algebra Follow the same steps Draw a model for the equation x + 4 = -2 Add the opposite of the constant to both sides x + 4 = -2 +(-4) x + 4 = -2 +(-4) Cross out ZPs on both sides x = -6 = Solve and check

2x + 1 = -3 Modeling Algebra Follow the same steps Draw a model for the equation 2x + 1 = -3 2x + 1 = -3 +(-1) Add the opposite of the constant to both sides 2x + 1 = -3 +(-1) Cross out ZPs on both sides 2x = -4 Solve and check x = -2

On your White Board … Solve this with models and algebra… 2x – 4 = 2

On your White Board … Solve this algebraically… 3x – 36 = -6
