Fifth Grade Curriculum The curriculum planned for the year is aligned with the Common Core State Standards. A complete listing of 5th Grade Common Core Standards can be found on California Department of Education Website http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/index.asp

Reading We will be using the McGraw-Hill Wonders Textbook, Practice Book, Thinking Maps, and GATE Icons to learn reading skills and strategies Book Club Students will be reading in all areas of the curriculum. Core Literature

Mathematics We will be using the McGraw-Hill My Math Textbook. There will be nightly homework. Students will need a dry erase marker and eraser and their Plicker.

Writing Writing instruction will occur daily in the classroom. Occasionally there will be follow up assignments given for homework. A variety of genres will be covered (Narrative, Opinion, Informative, and Poetry). Emphasis on Revision Strategies

Science /Social Studies Mrs. Jeans will teach social studies, while I cover science. Reading skills emphasized and practiced Social studies States and Capitals tests will begin and last for the next month and a half-students really need to study! Projects (heavy in 3rd trimester) 5th graders have CA Science Standards Test Study guides will be given and corrected in class for both social studies and science tests.

What was the outcome/accomplishment(s) of their exploration? Some questions are written to guide your search for information in the book and your notes. Christopher Columbus – Why did he sail west from Europe? Ferdinand Magellan – What was his major accomplishment? Hernando Cortes - What empire did his army conquer in Mexico? Jacques Cartier – What river did he search for gold along and claim for France? Juan Ponce de Leon – What present day state did he explore and claim for Spain? Francisco Vasquez de Coronado – What part of the United States did he explore and claim for Spain? Henry Hudson – What present day state did he explore and claim for Holland? Hernando - 6. What were three obstacles that early European explorers faced? 7. What was Christopher Columbus’s opinion about the lands he reached in 1492? Physical Education Cardiovascular fitness and student involvement will be emphasized. Team building skills. Rotating through a schedule of many sports and physical fitness activities. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes. 5th Grade PE Testing will be during the month of March.

Homework Policy Homework assignments may include: Unfinished class work assignments Scholastic News articles Exam preparation/study guides Projects Book Club Assignments Math (daily, M-Th) Independent reading (20 minutes+) Students are required to write down their homework each in their agenda/planner.

Citizenship Learning Community: In the classroom, every student has the right to learn and be respected for his or her ideas. Cooperative learning strategies are emphasized Citizenship plan is based upon a system of rewards and consequences using weekly citizenship charts Citizenship charts are due weekly with a parent signature.

Attendance School starts at 8:00 each day. Please try to help your child get to school on time. Absences-Please call the attendance line. Missed assignments need to be made up.

Important Dates Every Thursday is early dismissal at 1:05. 5th Grade Field Trip: Riley’s Farm-TBD Parent conferences are September 25-29. Please check your child’s backpack for the Morris folder each day. This folder will contain important information: weekly citizenship, flyers, and graded assignments.
