Presentation transcript:

Half the world -- nearly three billion people -- live on less than two dollars a day. Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names. Less than one per cent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn't happen.

Every year 11 million children die—most under the age of five and more than 6 million from completely preventable causes like malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia. Around the world, a total of 114 million children do not get even a basic education and 584 million women are illiterate. Every 30 seconds an African child dies of malaria—more than one million child deaths a year.

AIDS spreads twice as quickly among uneducated girls than among girls that have even some schooling. If we help schools to be built we can help cut back on the spread of AIDS A woman living in sub-Saharan Africa has a 1 in 16 chance of dying in pregnancy or childbirth. This compares with a 1 in 3,700 risk for a woman from north America. AIDS/HIV

We ARE Lucky... 1,101 billion people are living on less than $1 a day 1.632 billion more on less than $2 a day 852 million people are chronically undernourished More than 5 million children die each year because of hunger We ARE Lucky...
