Daddy Day Care: A Business Analysis Exercise Dr. Les Palich Baylor University January 2008

The Goal As you watch the movie clips, respond to the following questions. The goal is to see if you can integrate strategic management concepts as you make sense of what you see in the movie. The story is fictitious, of course, but there are many features of it that legitimately illustrate real world experiences in business. We will discuss your observations.

Clip #1 Due to copyright limitations, video content cannot be provided. _________________________ See “Daddy Day Care” DVD

Question #2 Question Set #1 What are the critical features of the Daddy Day Care (DDC) industry environment that allowed it to form and to continue its operations? How representative is this of actual business conditions?

Clip #2 Clip #2 Due to copyright limitations, video content cannot be provided. _________________________ See “Daddy Day Care” DVD

Question #2 Question Set #2 How important are the actions of competitors to the health of DDC? What does this suggest about competitive intelligence gathering? Can competitor actions like these actually occur (at least in some form)?

Clip #3 Clip #3 Due to copyright limitations, video content cannot be provided. _________________________ See “Daddy Day Care” DVD

Question #3 Question Set #3 Does DDC have a competitive advantage? What is it? What resources and capabilities make it possible? In your opinion, how sustainable is this advantage?

Clip #4 Clip #4 Due to copyright limitations, video content cannot be provided. _________________________ See “Daddy Day Care” DVD

Question #4 Question Set #4 Assess the quality of the implementation plan that DDC followed. What are its good and bad features? How well was it executed?

Clip #5 Clip #5 Due to copyright limitations, video content cannot be provided. _________________________ See “Daddy Day Care” DVD

Question #5 Question Set #5 What ethical issues surfaced in your mind as you watched the DDC story unfold? Identify the important stakeholders of DDC. How well did the owners of the venture manage these relationships?

Question #5 Question Set #6 What other observations do you have which are interesting and important but are not addressed in the questions above?
