The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Where do we start? “Begin with the end in mind.” The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey

Helping you Plan for the Future:

High School Diploma Options

High School Diploma Options In Virginia, diploma options available to all students in the class of 2022: Advanced Studies Diploma 26 Credits/5 Verified Credits Standard Diploma 22 credits/5 Verified Credits

High School Courses with an SOL Credits Students earn units of credit in high school by successfully completing all of the course requirements with a passing mark. Semester courses earn ½ unit of credit – 70 seat hours. Year-long classes earn 1 unit of credit – 140 seat hours. Verified Credits A verified credit is earned by successfully earning a credit, and passing the associated Standard of Learning (SOL) test for a subject. Students must earn a specified number of verified credits to earn a diploma in Virginia. High School Courses with an SOL World Hist/Geog 1; World Hist/Geog 2; US History Algebra 1; Geometry; Algebra 2 Earth Science; Biology; Chemistry English Reading; English Writing (during Eng. 11)

Other Graduation Requirements: A student must earn a board-approved career and technical education credential to graduate with a Standard Diploma. Certain CTE courses at Riverside will offer a board-approved exam that will meet this requirement. An example would be Personal Finance.

Other Graduation Requirements: A student must successfully complete one virtual course, which may be non-credit bearing, to graduate with either a Standard or Advanced Studies diploma, Currently students taking Personal Finance have modules built in to meet this virtual requirement.

Other Graduation Requirements: In order to be to be awarded a Standard or an Advanced Studies Diploma, students are to be trained in emergency first aid, CPR, and AED’s. Students will be able to complete these requirements through their Health & Physical Education classes.

hmmm…what classes do you sign up for next year?

Course Registration Process 2018-19 Course registration info. for rising 9th graders will be forwarded to Riverside HS. Feel free to consult with your current middle school counselor or call a member of our School Counseling Staff with questions. Course change deadline is June 13! The last day of school.

Course Changes Deadline is June 13 to make course changes for next year. Due to staffing projections it is imperative that we have student schedules in place. Please plan accordingly with this deadline. Requests to change courses after this date will be only be made if there was error in course level/placement or a student does not meet a course prerequisite Once school starts, we will expect students to remain in their selected course unless there are extenuating circumstances. There is a schedule change process established to process concerns.

Selecting your courses: Think about your abilities. Consider your students academic strengths and challenges. Consider previous grades and test scores. What is your students academic motivation?? Goals??

Selecting your courses: Consider Your Interests What is your favorite subject? In what subject(s) do you well? In what subject(s) do you not do well? What are your hobbies? What career(s) are you considering?

English, Social Studies, & Science options: Most 9th grade core courses are offered at two levels: Academic Honors or Pre-AP Reading level and work ethic are a key factors in deciding which level of courses a student should take in grade 9. Strongly consider teacher and counselor recommendations.

Social Sciences and Global Studies What courses can my Freshman take next year at Riverside? -Pre-AP World History -Academic World History

Pre-AP World History (Pre History – 1500) Who should take this course? Someone who appreciates history Is an avid reader Is willing and able to put in the work There is a LOT to learn There will be a learning curve Students will learn excellent writing and analysis skills, but it will take time and effort

Science Course Overview February 2018

Riverside Science We want students to be successful! We want to develop strong foundations in Science. Successful science is about making connections between different disciplines of science.

What Science Course should students take as a freshman? Freshman Science What Science Course should students take as a freshman? Academic Earth Science OR Research Earth Science

Why Research Earth Science? Research Earth Science establishes and does significant work in developing baseline science research skills that will be necessary for all research science courses.  Bio Research and Chemistry research students will be expected to have the following skills: Statistical analysis of data. Ability to effectively use scientific databases to source credible scientific information. Strong technical writing.

Does skipping Earth Science give more opportunities? Unfortunately, no. It actually removes opportunities. Students have the ability to take between 4 and 6 science classes throughout their high school experience.  There is plenty of time for science motivated students to dive deeper in one or two science content areas throughout their high school experience, and moving ahead does not actually better support their success.

What happens after freshman year? Chemistry can be difficult for sophomores WHY? Mathematical proficiency and application skills Suggested prerequisite of Alg 2 w/ Trig Difficulty of content Volume of new concepts Pacing is rigorous to adequately learn required content Abstract concepts

Long Term Planning What do I take all four years? How do those classes fit in to my overall plan for my future? Do the courses I take provide flexibility over the course of my high school career?

Advanced Courses Students who skip Earth Science Research will not be able to take AP Environmental Science, closing the door on opportunities for a class (with a 1.0 GPA bump) before they even begin their high school experience. They will also miss important skill sets necessary for Geospatial Information Systems (a 6 credit dual enrollment college credit class and 1.0 GPA bump). At Riverside, we would like students to keep their options open.

Advanced Courses (Cont Advanced Courses (Cont.) Ultimately, we want students to be highly successful in the courses they take, as well as giving a strong foundation to build on in their upper level courses.
