Key question / Learning outcomes Section A: Urban Issues and Challenges How is Rio improving the environment? Key idea Specification content A growing percentage of the world’s population lives in urban areas. A case study of a major city in an LIC of NEE to illustrate: The location and importance of the city, regionally, nationally and internationally Causes of Growth LEARNING OUTCOME… Locate Rio regionally, nationally and internationally. Describe why Rio is important regionally, nationally and internationally. Explain why Rio’s population has grown .

New Information/Activity Look at the map of Rio’s environmental challenges. Good: Sort the challenges into human challenges, physical challenges, or both. Better: Pick the top 3 challenges that you think will be the hardest to overcome and number them on your map. Best: Explain why you think those challenges will be the hardest to overcome.

New Information/Activity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCRdYNyJJTw&index=9&list=PLTpgCMnEq2rIXF-44BQJKRtkfj7Scvefq&t=204s New Information/Activity CAUSES SOLUTIONS 1) Create a table in your book with causes on one side and solutions on the other. 2) In the margin beside your table, write “water pollution” 3) Watch the video about water pollution in Rio. Fill in what is causing the pollution and what Rio has done to try and stop it. Water Pollution Challenge: Explain how these environmental issues could impact people’s everyday lives. Now make your way around to different tables and look at the other environmental problems Rio is facing. Add the title to your margin and fill in the table.

New Information/Activity Pick one of the environmental issues from your table that you find is the most interesting. You will create a brochure to be passed around to the people of Rio to inform them about this issue. Good brochures will have a description of the issue and how it is currently impacting people. Better brochures will also include what the city of Rio is currently doing to try and solve the issue. Best brochures will also include your own ideas as to what can be done to completely eliminate the problem. New Information/Activity Try and include pictures/maps on your brochure.
