Physical Geography & Human Migration

Vocabulary Migration - A permanent move from one place to a new location Immigration – A permanent move into a new country Push –factors that make you want to leave a place Pull – factors that draw you to live in a place

Questions Why do people migrate?

Push Factor – Economic People often leave areas where there is a lack of employment, natural disasters, lack of food or shelter or has a lower standard of living.

Desert taking over arable land can be an economic push factor

Push Factor - Social People leave areas where there is a lack of health care, educational opportunities and lack of religious tolerance.

Push Factor - Religious Persecution When people cannot worship as they wish they migrate. The pilgrims that landed at Plymouth were fleeing religious persecution.

What is the significance of the map?

Push Factor - Political People leave a place due to unfair legal systems, lack of govermental tolerance, war or terrorism.

Push Factor - Political Persecution Political persecution means that people are punished when they disagree with the government. This happens most in dictatorships or communist countries.

Push Factor - Conflict People flee from wars. These people are known as refugees. There are refugee camps as close as Tornillo Tx.

Push Factor - Limits on Freedom Communist countries often limit personal freedom. People cannot listen to certain music, watch certain television shows, or even say things bad about the government.
