Proposal for AP Station list Belonging to Different ESSID Date: 2009-07-13 Authors: Notice: This document has been prepared to assist IEEE 802.11. It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). The material in this document is subject to change in form and content after further study. The contributor(s) reserve(s) the right to add, amend or withdraw material contained herein. Release: The contributor grants a free, irrevocable license to the IEEE to incorporate material contained in this contribution, and any modifications thereof, in the creation of an IEEE Standards publication; to copyright in the IEEE’s name any IEEE Standards publication even though it may include portions of this contribution; and at the IEEE’s sole discretion to permit others to reproduce in whole or in part the resulting IEEE Standards publication. The contributor also acknowledges and accepts that this contribution may be made public by IEEE 802.11. Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures <http:// ieee802.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf>, including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair <stuart.ok-brit.com> as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE 802.11 Working Group. If you have questions, contact the IEEE Patent Committee Administrator at <patcom@ieee.org>. RuiJun Feng, China Mobile

Topics Background Problem Proposal RuiJun Feng, China Mobile

Background In may hot spots, the coverage of different operators’ APs are always crossed, overlapped, or even almost same. Some operators’ APs are for free and others are chargeable. As an operator, we always want to know which areas are more important to us and which hot spots are more competitive and less attractive. We are looking for potential and possible alliance with other operators or just wifi access providers. RuiJun Feng, China Mobile

Problem In some (high) profitable area, we always try to keep comparative competition advantage compared with other operators In some little profitable area, for example, as there is an AP for free, we would like to withdraw the coverage and maybe only leave seldom APs for VPN users. Therefore, if each AP in our WLAN can report a list of APs belong to other operators, we will estimate the coverage situation of other operators (semi)-automatically. It will enhance the accuracy of the estimation on other operators with costing less time RuiJun Feng, China Mobile

Proposal A new table is proposed to add into the MIB, called dot11APStaInOtherESSIDTable dot11APStaInOtherESSIDTable OBJECT-TYPE SYNTAX SEQUENCE OF dot11APStaInOtherESSIDEntry MAX-ACCESS not-accessible STATUS current DESCRIPTION "This table contains statics for AP stations that belong to different ESSID, which refers that how many non- neighbour AP stations are around a metering AP" ::= { dot11mac ? } RuiJun Feng, China Mobile

Proposal As followed dot11APStaInOtherESSIDEntry OBJECT-TYPE SYNTAX dot11APStaInOtherESSIDEntry STATUS current DESCRIPTION "" INDEX {ifIndex, dot11APBSSID} ::= {dot11APStaInOtherESSIDTable 1} dot11APStaInOtherESSIDEntry ::= SEQUENCE { dot11APBSSID MacAddress, dot11APESSID String, dot11APRecentRCPI INTEGER} RuiJun Feng, China Mobile

Proposal The functions of the proposed MIB table: After AC or MNS collects the tables of every AP in its network, we can get a comparative accuracy coverage map of other operators and its tendency. With its help, we can better plan how to optimize the wlan and how to and where to deploy new APs. Through the alliance with others, it could be possible to decrease the number of the planned AP with increasing the service quality On the statistics of the proposed table, the off-line negotiations with other operators or providers may regulate the distribution of AP and the channel choice in a more smooth way. RuiJun Feng, China Mobile

Straw Poll Do you think it is useful to put the dot11APStaInOtherESSIDTable counter into the MIB to facilitate some service and network quality statistics? - Yes - No - Abstain RuiJun Feng, China Mobile
