Using the international network to recruit local members BPW added value

A BPW CLUB IS INTERNATIONAL AND A BPW CLUB IS LOCAL

Our strategies to recruit… Networking and personal contacts Thematic campaigns e.g. Equal Pay Day Workshops and events Media and social media presence

Arguments for recruitment? BPW activities BPW core issues and lobbying Personal career development Learning by doing Friendship

Still… it does not quite work Turnover Limited outreach and visibility in the community Lots of time spent and efforts for little return Limited finances Limited members’ time

Can we make it easier on ourselves ? Who do we want to recruit? Why should they join an international NGO? To do what together? What are your local club characteristics? What are your locality/region characteristics? How to use the local context to be more easily visible? How to demonstrate the added value of an international network?

Analysing your local context

What is YOUR club’s specific socio-economic context ? Which industries and services structure your local economy? – positive or negative aspects What are your geographical constraints and opportunities? What about population: age structure, education, etc? What about mobility: which kind, what impact? What intellectual context: universities, research centres, art, etc? Legal and political context?

What of its international aspects? What is the reputation of your locality at international level? What aspects can be seen as positive by people from other countries? What aspects can be seen as negative by people from other countries? Is the population moving in or out? International or European structures within reach?

What are your local resources? Local and regional multiannual strategies Town twinnings Local traditions and events Yearly events and conferences calendar Network of NGOs Local information platform Citizen input processes and structures Dedicated structures for gender issues

Analysing your club’s resources

What are your internal resources? Professions existing in your club Nationalities Linguistic skills Specific competences Questions or ideas from members Common vision Projects Staff Partnerships

What are your club objectives? Do they relate to external socio-economic context How do they build on external resources How are they related to the objectives of another/other BPW clubs Do they tie in with European/International campaigns Are they decided taking into consideration members’ know-how, networks, availability
