Where and when will you be in the mood to discuss this?? Setting and Mood Where and when will you be in the mood to discuss this??

The Basics Regarding Setting Definition: Setting is the time and place in which a story (or particular part of a story) takes place If a story’s setting changes, time and place details are often the most important clues/signals to the reader that the story has taken a turn or a twist in some way It IS possible for an interesting story to have little or not setting at all, but a strong setting can also make a story more effective Discussion Question: Can you think of a story you’ve read/seen in which the setting is important to the effectiveness of the story?

Setting and Mood: They’re definitely related-practically brothers even… A very important function of setting is that it can create the story’s MOOD or emotional atmosphere. Setting details can make us feel happy or tense or gloomy, etc, depending on how well the author incorporates the detail REMEMBER: Do not confuse mood and tone! We will discuss tone later, but be aware that mood and tone are two different things!

Setting and Conflict: They could be considered dueling step sisters-let me explain… Though in some stories, setting might not matter much, in others it may provide the main conflict and can directly affect a story’s meaning. Discussion Question: Can you think of a story in which the setting or environment is also the antagonist, or source of CONFLICT, in the story?

Setting and Character: They’re like cousins who reveal each other’s secrets! Setting also helps reveal character “How?” You are probably wondering…well, I’ll show you ACTIVITY: Room Raiders Recap: An author might use the setting to give us hints about the character in some way. If you are a character in a story, and the author describes your bedroom before we even meet the character, think of what the reader can tell about you before your character even enters the room!

Practice: Setting, Mood and Character Directions: for EACH movie trailer take notes on the following: The setting (What does it look like, where does it seem to take place) The mood (what is the feeling you get from watching these trailers? How and why did you get this feeling?) Character (How is the main character portrayed? How does the setting and mood contribute to this characterization?) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmkVWuP_sO0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S014oGZiSdI
