MTM for volunteers 2019

Meet the Master It’s a volunteer Art history and art appreciation program developed for each grade. It’s been developed by Broward County and we have some guidelines to follow:

MTM - Guidelines 7 Portfolios per grade Biography of each artist is on the back of each portfolio Don’t have to follow the order, but you can’t have your own artist. MTM artists and art were chosen for their age appropriate content. Any non MTM artist’s work should only be used as inspiration to the students for the project should relate in some way to the featured MTM artists used in your presentation and be age appropriate.

-Research Materials - Portfolios labeled from A to G Red binders at MTM’s closet with a copy of all the prints and artist bio’s. What’s new: this year we want to create a binder with the art work done by our students. Our goal is to have a sample of the works that we are developing and inspire ourselves with fresh new ideas. Facebook group where we can post the last art work, share ideas that went good or wrong. Let’s build a MTM community. Facegroup page: Meet the Master- Gator Run Elementary

Materials Paints, crayons, brushes, papers… Check the material’s availability before you plan. Paints: Use the primary colors (blue, red and yellow) to create the other colors Can I bring new materials? Yes, but there is no refund for material’s purchased by volunteers. Be very conservative of the supplies and try to recycle as much as possible. Wash the cups you are using for the brushes and bring them back, for example. Don’t forget to clean the materials before returning them to the closet! If you have to use the T shirts and they come back dirty place them on the bucket that says: dirty T shrits

Volunteers Complete your on line volunteer application on line. PTA website get involved in education . Once approved bring your id and get your badge. All hours are automatically recorded by the front office. All hours off site must be logged on a Volunteer Tracking Form 2017-2018 (binder at the MTM closet)

Volunteers (coordinator x assistant) .They are the liaison between the teacher and any other volunteers in their class. .Responsible for contacting the teacher in order to set up a schedule for the program. .Often define the activity that will be done together or not with other volunteers, prep materials, sign up for portfolios, return materials to the MTM closet). What do I need to be a coordinator? Follow the MTM guidelines, but if you have been in a MTM class before and have some experience it’s even better!

Volunteers I would like to help but I do not speak English very well or I would like to help, but I am not an “art teacher”… It’s not a problem. Please volunteer as a assistant and tell your coordinator. There are plenty of work to be done.  For those who are starting we can count on Mrs. Silvia to help you with the first class or with the ideas in general.

Presentations How much time do I have? Depends of the teacher. She or He will tell you this. And we have to plan the activity accordingly. Also consider the clean up time as part of the time. 10 – 15 minutes to talk about the artist. Present your information in a fun, age appropriate way What do I do with the presentations? Discuss with the teacher. Are you doing a binder for each kid and giving it back at the end of the year? Are you giving them back at the end of each class? It’s up to you. But plan it first!

Ok. I got it. How do I start? 1) Volunteer badge 2) Wait for the email and check if you are a coordinator or a assistant. 3) Talk to the teacher (coordinator). Present yourself. Set up a date and time for the activity. 4)In group or not go though the portfolio and plan an activity for each class. 5) Reserve the portfolios and supplies earlier (at least one week before). Don’t do it at the day of the class! 6) Arrive 15 minutes earlier. Sign in. Get the materials and enjoy it! 

Personal Tips 1) Use the first class to feel the class and the teacher. 2) Kids like paint! 3) Have a sample in advance in order to show to the class. 4)Little kids 2nd grade and under need more instruction. Make sure they are all on the same page. Make sure they are all doing the same activity and understand the concept of the project! 5)When doing an activity that involves cutting, it is better to have whatever they are cutting already cut out for them! Ask them questions about the art or the artist. It’s the best way to get them involved.
