Attainment Attainment in school matters because it affects children’s beliefs about, and expectations of, themselves as well as adults’ beliefs about children. Attainment affects life chances as well as health and professional outcomes. Children who live in poverty are more likely to do less well as school than their peers. The Scottish Attainment Challenge aims to raise attainment of children and young people living in deprived areas.

Attainment and growth mindset Carol Dweck and others have published widely on the positive impact of growth mindset on school attainment and enjoyment of academic subjects. A growth mindset culture has positively affected school attainment at Vale of Leven Academy, in Scotland. High expectations, effective feedback, positive teacher-pupil and pupil-pupil relationships and use of meta-cognitive strategies in a supportive growth mindset environment will contribute to a positive school experience.
