Information Explosion Volume Every day, 15 petabytes of new information are being generated. By 2010, the codified information base of the world is expected to double every 11 hours. Variety 80% of new data growth is unstructured content, generated largely by email, with increasing contribution by documents, images, and video and audio. Velocity An average company with 1,000 employees spends $5.3 million a year to find information stored on its servers. 42% of managers say they use the wrong information at least once per week. Variety 80% of new data growth is unstructured content, generated largely by email, with increasing contribution by documents, images, and video and audio 38% of email archiving decisions receive input from a C-level executive and 23% from legal/compliance professional Velocity of Decision Making An average company with 1,000 employees spends $5.3 million a year to find information stored on its servers.1 42% of managers say they inadvertently use the wrong information at least once per week ***** From similar slide ***** New Data New Information! Volume of Digital Data 57% CAGR for enterprise data through 2010 Machine generated data : Sensors, RFID, GPS.. Variety of Information 80% of new data growth is unstructured content Emails, images, audio, video.. Rapidly changing business climate Need to get ahead of the curve : predict issues and fix them Summary Volume and variety of information (structured and unstructured) is exploding, as the Planet becomes Smarter. Also, current economic times require corporations and governments to analyze new information faster and make timely decisions for achieving business goals! Full Script There are several factors driving the need for a new way of looking at information and the way we make decisions based on that information… Volume of Digital Data: The data explosion, of course, but also shifts in the nature of data. Once virtually all the information available to be "processed" was authored by someone. Now that kind of data is being overwhelmed by machine-generated data – spewing out of sensors, RFID, meters, microphones, surveillance systems, GPS systems and all manner of animate and inanimate objects. By 2010, the amount of digital information will grow to 988 Exabytes (equivalent to a stack of books from the sun to Pluto and back) Every day, 15 Petabytes of new information are being generated. This 8 times more than the information in all U.S. libraries The number of emails sent every day is estimated to be over 200 billion By 2010, the codified information base of the world is expected to double every 11 hours Variety of Information (diversity and heterogeneity): With this expansion of the sources of information comes large variance in the complexion of the available data -- very noisy, lots of errors -- and no time to cleanse it in a world of real-time decision making. 80% of new data growth is unstructured content, generated largely by email, with increasing contribution by documents, images, and video and audio The average car will have 100 million lines of code by 2010; the Airbus A380 alone contains over 1 billion lines of code Velocity of Decision Making: This is about optimizing the speed of insight generated as well as confidence that the decisions and actions taken will yield the best outcomes based on more proactive, planning around the management and use of information sources, and creating far more advanced predictive capabilities: Every week, the average information worker spends 14.5 hours reading & answering e-mail, 13.3 hours creating documents, 9.6 hours searching for information, 9.5 hours analyzing information For every 1,000 knowledge workers, $5.7 million is lost annually in time wasted reformatting information between applications. Not finding the right information costs an additional $5.3 million per year An Institute for Business Value Agile CFO Study in 2007 indicated that only 9% of senior finance executives believe they excel at gathering, interpreting & conveying information to senior management New Data  New Information: All of this data is creating challenges – It also provides an excellent opportunity for driving new information and business insight! Companies are governments are looking at ways to sort through the data, understand and connect the key pieces of information and drive smarter business outcomes based by leveraging the information assets! (Transition to the next slide) Information Week Survey: 70% say Regulations drive up storage demands, businesses realizing they must classify, manage, delete data - not just keep adding storage

Information Compliance Information Availability Information Retention How can I reduce IT costs and risks while improving information availability? Challenges Data growth continues unabated, 25% to 50% a year. IT budgets flat or decreasing. Increased use of rich content and unstructured data. More security and compliance regulations impacting IT. Solution IBM extends its Information Infrastructure technology leadership with significant advancements in virtualization, solid-state storage, and encryption. Benefits Reduce storage acquisition costs by up to 70% for rapid ROI, shrink backup windows, and improve restore performance. Increase storage utilization by up to 30% with storage virtualization. Improve throughput up to 300% using just 10% solid-state storage. Improve security with drive-level encryption. 9/29 Information Compliance Information Availability Information Retention Information Security

IBM Information Infrastructure enhancements can help improve throughput, security and management while controlling costs. Solid-state Storage Improve throughput up to 8x with solid-state storage, available for all IBM servers. Smart use of solid-state storage can gain 3x throughput with just 10% solid-state. New performance monitoring and analytics for solid-state optimization on DS8000. New solid-state option for SAN Volume Controller achieves up to 800,000 IOPS. Storage Virtualization Simplify storage management. Increase storage utilization by up to 30%. Reduce energy costs through efficient use of tiered storage. Enhanced SAN Volume Controller v5 adds solid-state option, Reverse Flash Copy, multi-site mirroring, iSCSI, and faster internal processors. 9/29 Archive and Compliance Solution Single integrated solution for both simple archive and policy-based retention. Tiered storage support, including tape. Built-in deduplication and encryption New IBM Information Archive, integrated IBM Smart Business System for archive and retention management.

How can I leverage mainframes for information-led transformation? Challenges New workloads with rich content and unstructured data. Significantly higher data volumes expected. Migrating from other platforms with minimal disruption. Solution IBM offers Information Infrastructure advancements for Mainframe clients to support new information-driven workloads more effectively. Benefits World-class stability, scalability, resiliency and economics. Innovative technology and services to support new workloads more effectively. The original “cloud” platform. Information Compliance Information Availability Information Retention Information Security

IBM Information Infrastructure can help mainframe clients support new information-driven workloads more effectively. High End Enterprise Disk Up to 3x throughput increase with just 10% solid-state storage. New performance monitoring and analytics for solid-state optimization. New IBM System Storage™ DS8700 Over 2.5x performance improvement for popular workloads, with new chip set. Reliable upgrade – reuses over 90% of DS8300 microcode Data Mobility, On-line Data Migration New support for extended remote copy (XRC) and TCP/IP Communication in a Multi Sysplex environment. Enhanced Hyperswap support.
