Water & Carbon Cycle Changes Over Time Land-use changes and the impact on the carbon and water cycles

Land Use Changes Objectives To be able to explain how changes to land use can affect the carbon and water cycles. To be able to interpret maps and draw conclusions.

This map shows the changing land use in this area between 1930 and today. What changes can you identify? How might these changes have affected the carbon and water cycle in this place?

Land Use Changes Use the information on pages 120 – 121 to annotate your map to explain how the following changes may have affected the local carbon and water cycles. The mixed forestry plantation at Friston. The growth of Seaford. The change from pasture to arable land at Rathfinny and Cradle Hill (49 01 & 50 01) The introduction of heathland at Lullington (53 02)

Land Use Changes Final Thought If James Lovelock’s Gaia Hypothesis is correct – how would the world respond to restore a dynamic equilibrium?
