Work Readiness Training Keeping the Job Work Readiness Training

Today’s Workshop Once you have a job, how do you keep it?

Why is Keeping a Job Important? You get paid. If you do well, you get a raise, promotion, or better hours. You will get a good job reference when you go to your next job. You will feel good about yourself.

Keeping the Job What are employers looking for in an employee ?

True or False? 1. Most young adults find it easier to get a job than to keep a job. 2. The reason most young adults are fired is because they did not learn the job well enough. 3. It is okay to miss a lot of work as long as you call your employer to tell them you’re sick.

True or False? 4. If you don’t like your new job, it is best to quit after the first week. 5. One reason to do well on a job is to get a good reference for your next job.

Three Ways to Keep Your Job Show Up. Do the job and do it well. Get along with others.

#1 Show Up

Show Up Know your work schedule. Plan ahead for transportation & clothes. Don’t call in sick all the time.

Show Up Be on time or 10 minutes early. If you have to be sick or late, call your employer. This is work; not school.

Scenario Marco works at Urban Corps and has to be at work at 7:00 every morning. He takes the bus at 6:05 a.m. to get to work on time. He is invited to go to a party on a Thursday night. He has to get up early for work the next day. What should he do?

#2 Do Your Job and Do It Well

Do the Job and Do It Well Arrive prepared mentally & physically Act like it counts because it does. Ask questions. Do your job duties and a little bit more.

Do Your Job and Do It Well Take initiative on the job. Challenge yourself to do the best you can. Who is the best worker at your job? What can you learn from him or her?

Scenario Paul works as a cart-pusher at Home Depot. It is physically demanding work, and he spends most of the day in the hot sun pushing heavy carts back to the store. He feels like his boss is always on him about not working fast enough because there are still carts in the parking lot. Paul gets frustrated and wants to tell his boss off. How should he handle this?

Scenario Jorge works at Subway making sandwiches. It is extremely busy during the lunch hour, but then slows way down. During the slow times, Jorge isn’t sure what he should be doing. It gets really boring. What should he do?

#3 Get Along with Others

Get Along with Others Your supervisor Your co-workers The customers

Your Supervisor Ask questions Be respectful If you were the supervisor, what kind of employee would you want?

Your co-workers Use appropriate language at work. You don’t have to like your co-workers, but you do have to get along with them. No gossip. No complaining or whining.

The Customers Focus on doing a good job even if customers are rude. In difficult situations, ask supervisor for help if you can. Be polite and respectful even if the customer is not.

Ten Ways to Get Fired On a blank sheet of paper, number #1-10. Lists poor work habits that could lead to an employee getting fired.

Ten Ways to Get Fired. Don’t follow supervisor’s directions. Act like your doing your boss a favor by working. Lie, cheat, steal from the company. Complain all the time. Leave job task unfinished. Be unsafe. Be rude to customers. Call in sick all the time. Come to work tired, cranky. Come to work under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Three Ways to Keep a Job. Show Up Do Your Job and Do It Well. Get along with others. Take pride in your work.
