MAKING A DIFFRENCE

Ftnc CLASSES Hands-on exploration of learning, teaching, and schooling. Includes observations and a teaching internship in local schools. You do NOT have to plan on a career in teaching to benefit from this class.

BENEFITS Participate in honors level coursework Receive 6 hours of college credit from participating North Carolina colleges and universities  Access to scholarship and loan opportunities  Gain Information on psychology and instructional strategies to help you decide if teaching is a potential career option  Participate in field trips and college days at associated North Carolina colleges and universities  Receive prestige associated with being a FTNC student

ARE you eligible? Have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale (B average)  Be recommended in writing by three or more instructors  Submit an essay on why you wish to be a FTNC student  Be a senior or junior  Agree to provide data for program evaluation via a brief pre- and post-survey, including a valid social security number for data collection and reporting purposes only

COURSES –WHAT WILL YOU LEARN? TEACHING AS A PROFESSION 1 Examine aptitudes for teaching. Examine learner needs and development, including students with exceptionalities. Examine the history, trends, and governance of education. English/language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, technology, and interpersonal relationships are reinforced. TEACHING AS A PROFESSION 2 Embedded internship experience with a cooperating teacher as they design, deliver, and reflect on their instruction. Students also investigate certification, employment, ethics, and professionalism in education. English/language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, technology, and interpersonal relationships are reinforced.

COURSES OVERVIEW  Studies growth and development of the learner   Examines the historical, social, political, cultural and legal forces that shape education in the US public school system   Explores the role of the teacher and philosophy that guides teaching   Investigates the North Carolina teacher licensure process   Provides real-world field experiences designed to connect theory and practice of the teaching profession.
