8-Digestive System

is a process by which food is absorbed. 2 - Digestion is a process by which food is absorbed.

begins to prepare food for digestion. 3 - The mouth begins to prepare food for digestion.

grind food into smaller substrates. 4 - Teeth grind food into smaller substrates.

5 - salivary glands secretes saliva and begins digestion of the food using enzymes.

6 - The pharynx and esophagus allows passage of the food into the stomach.

7 - The stomach uses gastric juices and absorbs a small amount of the food. Then, the food goes to the small intestine.

8 - The pancreas and the liver release enzymes and bile respectively into the small intestine to aid in absorption.

9 - The small intestine is composed of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Then, substrates are passed into the large intestine, which has little digestive function. Absorption of water and electrolytes does occur in the large intestine.

10 - Peristalsis is the wave like movement occurring in the digestive system that propels food downward.

11 - The alimentary canal is the path food travels from the mouth to the anus. Feces are composed mostly of water and substrates and are not absorbed.

12 - Key Terms Cholelithiasis [ko-lee-lith-I-a-sis] – stones in the gallbladder Diverticulitis - inflammation of the small pouches in the colon, if present Hepatitis - inflammation of the liver Somatitis - inflammation of the mouth Dyspepsia - indigestion Enteritis - inflammation of the intestine
