Virtual Skipping Competition 2010 Year group Challenges KS1 – Side jumps Years 3 & 4 – Side jumps & forward skips Years 5 & 6 – All 3 disciplines KS1 and pupils in years 3 & 4 may attempt all 3 challenges if competent. The 3 Challenges Side jumps How many side jumps over a skipping rope in 1 minute Forward skips How many forward skips in 1 minute Combined skips With a partner and 1 rope; how many skips in 1 minute Increases Intra & Inter school competition

Competition Rules Side jumps Forward skips (original skips) Equipment needed – 1 skipping rope Description of exercise : A skipping rope is positioned on the floor in a straight line Pupils then jump from side to side across the rope (a single left to right jump is counted as 1) The number of jumps in 1 minute are recorded Forward skips (original skips) Equipment needed – 1 skipping rope Description of exercise : Each pupil holds the 2 handles of the skipping rope with the rope positioned behind them The rope is then swung over the head and under the feet as the pupil jumps upwards When the rope moves past the starting position; 1 repetition is counted The number of skips in 1 minute are recorded Combined skips (performed in pairs) Equipment needed – 1 skipping rope Description of exercise : Pupils stand approximately 50cm apart, facing each other with one holding the skipping rope in the forward skip position A forward skip as described above is performed, but this time the rope comes over the partners head and a jump is required from the partner for the rope to pass under their feet When the rope moves past the starting position 1 repetition is counted The number of skips in 1 minute are recorded

How to record the results Although it is important to ensure results are accurate, it is not necessary for the teacher to do all the work! A Wall Chart If each classroom can have a chart, pupils will be able to input their own results as they achieve a new personal best. This is a great way to emphasis the importance of practice and progression. Individual Score Cards Pupils will record their own or alternatively record other pupil’s results. At the end of the lesson or break the cards can be handed in to the teacher and the results collated. Sending the Results to the Competition Manager All results will be sent to the competition Co-ordinator (Hayley Pegg) via email, therefore the results will have to be saved electronically (via attached Excel document). Teachers or other school staff may be willing to take on this responsibility; however this is a great opportunity to make the project cross-curricular. After using the class results sheet (on slide 4) or the Individual results sheet (on slide 5) pupils could be asked to each input their BEST scores on to the attached Excel master spreadsheet which includes the entire class results and also the top ten positions, enabling them to practice their ICT skills. Completed Excel Spreadsheets should be emailed to the Competition Co-ordinator: hpegg@eastwood.southend.sch.uk
