Emancipation Proclamation The proclamation had little effect at first because it freed the slaves only in states that had seceded from the Union. Prompted many slaves to escape when Union troops came near. It did not free slaves in border states.

African American Participation in the War As war causalities climbed, the Union needed even more troops. Many Free African Americans were willing to volunteer to fight, as Slaves escaped to the North they were allowed to join the Union army. Confederate troops treated African American troops harshly either killing them brutally or selling them back into captivity. One unit in particular proved themselves to be excellent soldiers. This unit is known as the 54th Infantry. They lead a heroic charge on S.Carolina’s Fort Wagner .

Blacks in the Military After the Emancipation Proclamation blacks began to join the Union Army Initially they were only used for manual labor Eventually, Blacks saw live combat 54th regiment out of Massachusetts William Carney
