What Oil Makes The Biggest Cake? Gracie Gaston 11/28/13 per:7

Question/Problem Which cake will weigh and become the tallest after using three different kinds of oils?

Background I chose this topic because I wanted to know which oil would make the cake the heaviest and the tallest. I also chose this so I would know which oil made the cake the moistest. This experiment would help me prove which cake might feed the most people. olive oil coconut oil vegetable oil

Hypothesis If I add vegetable oil to the cake, the cake will rise and weigh more than if I added olive, or coconut.

Variables Independent(Manipulated)Variable:The oil used Dependent Variable:The height and weight Controls:The same mix. Also the same pan after being washed. Lastly the same amount of time the cakes spend in the oven.

Procedure (1) First I went to the store and bought all my supplies. (2) Then I layed out all my supplies that I needed in a certain order so I knew what went into each cake. (3) After I completed the first two steps I made my cake. And added ⅓ of oil to the cake batter. (4) After I made the cake batter I put it in a 9x13 glass pan that weighed 5 pounds. (5) Next I set the timer for 28 minutes. (6) Then I got the cake out of the oven and cut a hole on the side so I could measure the height. (7) Next I weighed the cake. (8) Finally I recorded my data in my Lab Report. (9) Then I repeated steps 3-8.

Data Some interesting things that I discovered while doing this project were The vegetable cake was very hard and dry. The coconut oil cake was very moist and soft. coconut cake The olive oil cake was not done so we had to leave it in longer to cook because it was still runny inside.

Data

Data

Conclusion 1. The problem or question I had was two of the cakes weighed the same amount. 2. What I did was I made three of the same cakes with three different types of oil. I measured which cake was the tallest and the heaviest. 3. The data I collected was the cakes made of olive and coconut oil both were 2 inches tall. The cake made with the vegetable oil weighed the most. 4. My data supported the weight part of my hypothesis although it did not support the second half. Why? The vegetable oil cake weighed the most, but was the shortest in height. 5. I learned that if you want to make a tall cake use olive oil or coconut oil . I also learned that if you want a heavier cake use vegetable oil. Lastly I learned that coconut oil makes your cake very soft and moist. 6. The only problem I encountered with the lab was that the cakes were very similar in size. What I would have done differently is use a different amount of eggs in the same type of cake mix and oil.
