Fig. 1 Diagram of extracorporeal perfusion circuit. Blood is removed from the baboon inferior vena cava and delivered to the swine main pulmonary artery with a roller pump. Blood is drained into a reservoir and returned to the baboon with a second roller pump. The lungs are ventilated with an inspired oxygen fraction of 0.6, and the peak inspiratory pressure is maintained between 25 to 30 cm H2O during the procedure.
