Guiding Questions (Pillars of Good Teaching) Why am I teaching this lesson? Lesson rationale or justification What do I want my students to learn? Learning or lesson objective IEP Objective(s) How will I teach this specific learning/IEP objective? How will I know if the students learned the objective? How will I engage my students?

What is a Learning Objective? Objectives must be clear to students Students should know what they are doing and why they are doing it Students should understand the objectives as part of a larger picture Fully explain the objective in context The students should be able to explain them Can be differentiated Success criteria should be clear (assessment)

What is Included in a Learning Objective? Student Clearly defined observable action Specified measurement

Examples The students will correctly list the eight Hawai’ian Islands The students will correctly label the eight Hawai’ian Islands The students will write two differences between the ecosystems of Hilo and Kona Find a partner and write two observable and measurable learning objectives
