Social Women Men Lineage based on the mother respected for their work (having children, increasing size of lineage group) Could inherit property Could hold social/political leadership roles Men didn’t know the link between sex and birth Often expected to move into wives houses Lineage based on the mother

Political Fortified villages, often grew into larger communities Tribes ruled by chiefs Empires ruled by kings

Interaction Between Humans and the Environment Disease (malaria) introduced

Culture Religions included, Hinduism and Buddhism Art, stories, and music used to serve religion Dance used to communicate with spirts Stories, told by griots, kept the history of people alive

Economy Relied mostly on trade Gold and salt
