What Are Our Natural Resources and why are they so important?

A natural resource is anything we use that comes from Nature. Natural Resources are NOT man-made. They have to come from the earth, like water, sunlight, and trees. Natural Resources

Non-Renewable Resources are resources that once they are used they are gone for good or take many many years to replace.

Renewable Resources can reproduce or are capable of being replenished or replaced by natural process.

How fast are we using Non-renewable resources? As the world population and demand for energy increases, having a variety of energy sources becomes more and more important. We consume energy quickly, so we need sources of energy that are long-lasting, efficient, and as clean as possible. In this investigation, you will model the depletion of resources over time at a constant rate of use. Then you will model the depletion of resources when the rate of use increases.

Non-renewable energy Investigation Fill your container with 100 beans (90 of one color and 10 of another) 90 beans = 90% of US energy comes from non-renewable resources. 10 beans = 10% if US energy created by using renewable.

For the first trial, the population is NOT growing and the demand for resources stays exactly the same from one year to the next.

First student will put on the blindfold First student will put on the blindfold. The blindfolded students will pick 10 beans from the container. Any “renewable beans” can be put back in the container. Count how many beans remain in the jar. Record this information in the Year 1 column of Table 1. Calculate the % of renewable by dividing the number of Renewable beans by your new total number of beans. Calculate the % of non-renewable by dividing the number of non-renewable by the total number of beans . Repeat until only renewable beans are left.

For the second trial the population is GROWING and so the demand for energy is increasing.

Proceed the same way except now increase the number of resources you pull out by 5 each year.

Be sure to graph and answer questions in complete sentences.
