Where have we heard the word “respiration” before? Cell respiration

Why do we eat?

Food = fuel Our body needs food to have the energy to keep running. This is why you want to eat a good breakfast before going skiing, or why you might bring a bag of trail mix on a hike, Its why moms care so much about soccer practice snacks. The more energy you burn, the more hungry you get. Food doesn’t come packaged to you as edible energy, your body has to do some work to make it more useful.

Storing and Using Energy is like… A Bank. When you eat carbohydrates, you add to your body’s energy savings account. These carbohydrates are like a deposit in the energy bank for later. When cells need energy, they withdraw it from the bank of carbohydrates and break it down. This process releases the energy they need

Cellular Respiration= energy withdrawal After you eat a meal, your body converts the carbohydrates in the food into glucose, a type of sugar. The process by which they “withdraw” energy from glucose is called RESPIRATION. During respiration, cells break down simple food molecules such as glucose and release the energy they contain.
