Bell work Week 20
Title of notes: One-Step Equations Pg 31 RS
The inverse operations are: Addition and subtraction DIRECTIONS FOR SOLVING ONE STEP EQUATIONS To solve one-step equations, we do the inverse (opposite) of whatever operation is being performed on the variable, so we get the variable by itself. The inverse operations are: Addition and subtraction Multiplication and division The most important thing to remember is that whatever you do to one side of the equation, you have to do the same thing to the other side.
One-Step Equation Examples Title: One-Step Equation Examples Pg 31 LS
You use the subtraction property of equality to subtract 2 from both sides in order to get the “y” by itself. 2 -2 x = 2 To check to see if your answer is correct, substitute the x in your equation with the 2. Solve the equation. If it is true then the value for x is correct.
You use the addition property of equality to add 6 to both sides in order to get the “y” by itself. +6 +6 x = 16 To check to see if your answer is correct, substitute the x in your equation with the 16. Solve the equation. If it is true then the value for x is correct

Ex. 3: x = 5 3 x . . = 3 3 5 Multiply 3 by both sides 3 x = 15 To check to see if your answer is correct, substitute the x in your equation with the 15. Solve the equation. If it is true then the value for x is correct CK: 15 = 5 3
Ex. 4: 5x = 125 5 5 Divide 5 by both sides x = 25 To check to see if your answer is correct, substitute the x in your equation with the 25. Solve the equation. If it is true then the value for x is correct CK: 5 x 25 = 125
