PCH Lesson 1 Statement of Objectives We know that there are a lot of behaviors that make us healthier. By the end of the lesson, you will conclude we have some control over risks for communicable and chronic diseases

Get Acquainted with Health The goal is to find a classmate that practices each of the healthy behaviors and get as many signatures as possible

Discussion Which were easier to find and which were more difficult to find? What might be the risks or potential consequences for a person not practicing the behavior?

There’s a Hole in My Sidewalk What do you think the hole represents? How does the person “react” the first two times? What changes in the attitude on the third time? What does he/she do differently the 3rd time? What is the importance of the choice made the 4th time? What parallels can you see between the person in this story and choices some teens have made in life so far? What can we learn from doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results?

No Risk, Possible Risk, High Risk Make a chart with 3 columns on your paper. Place in the chart the possible risk activities to where you think they belong.

Risk Factors Show Appendix 3A, 3B

Serious Health Risks for Youth Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence Tobacco use Alcohol and other drugs Sexual risk factors Unhealthy dietary behaviors Physical inactivity PAGE 4: PCH NOTES

The leading causes of death in the United States can be prevented, to a large extent, by improving personal health choices. There personal choices require an individual to go through a decision making process throughout the day. Before a high school student arrives at school each day, he or she has intentionally and/or inadvertently made dozens of decisions. Examples of these decisions- Whether or not to take a shower, what to eat for breakfast, whether to ride the bus, drive themselves, or ride with a friend, whether or not to wear a seatbelt, whether or not to drive safely.

Responsible Decision Making Is crucial to living a healthy lifestyle and it requires skill and practice

Decision Making Steps Identify the decision, which needs to be made Gather relevant information from reliable sources List possible choices List the positive and negative outcomes of each choice Determine who could possibly be affected by your choice Determine who is influencing your choice Determine which choices have the most positive and the least negative outcomes Act upon your choice Evaluate the decision

Take Control Use the decision making model to reduce a risk We will first take control together, by determining how to maximize our control over the prevention of skin cancer Take Control WS

Guided Practice Next, you will use the take control worksheet and complete it on your own. Choose one of the following. HIV, asthma, Diabetes, heart diseases, strep, cancer, influenza

Independent Practice/ Closure Health Continuum Worksheet: How healthy are you?
