Graduation Requirements (Grades 9-12) 4 Units of English 4 Units of Science 4 Units of Mathematics 3 Units of Social Studies 3 Units of Career/Technology and/or World Language and/or Fine Arts 1 Unit of Health & Physical Education 4 Units of Electives (minimum) A total of 23 Units Note: World Language (Foreign Language) is not required for Graduation BUT is required for acceptance into a 4 year College or University 2

Old graduation requirements prior to 2012 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS 1) College Prep, 2) College Prep w/ distinction, 3) Technology & Career 4) Technology & Career w/ distinction Since 2007-2008 there has not been College Prep/Vocational Track Changes were made to the former graduation rule to adhere to the Georgia Performance Standards and the American Diploma Project Old graduation requirements prior to 2012 3

New Graduation Rule 2012 to Present Objective: All High School Graduates will be prepared for College and the Workplace. There is no longer college prep or vocational

English/Language Arts Requirements The 4 units must include: * 1 unit of 9th grade Literature and Composition * 1 unit of American Literature and Composition *2 additional units in English\Language Arts Honors and AP level courses are available in all 4 years of high school. Some middle school students may have taken advantage of a 9th Grade Honors Literature and Composition course this year in 8th grade. What is MYAP? All high school students use the IC MYAP Career Planner Review all MYAP information in High School 101 and at this link: https://www.paulding.k12.ga.us/Page/34137 All high school students use the IC MYAP Career Planner 8th grade middle school students prepare their IGP (Individual Graduation Plan) in their IC Student Portal from the BRIDGE Advisement document. This information includes planned courses and the planned courses become the scheduled courses for the ninth grade year.

Honors and Advanced Placement Course Information for the CORE Academic and Fine Arts Areas

What 9th grade Honors/Advanced Placement classes are available? Honors 9th Grade Literature/Composition Or 10th Grade Honors World Literature (for students enrolled in H. 9th Grade Lit in 8th Grade) Honors GSE Algebra I Or Honors GSE Geometry (for students enrolled in H. GSE Algebra 1 in 8th grade) Honors Biology Honors World Geography/ AP Human Geography

How are Honors/AP classes beneficial to my GPA? Honors courses are weighted. With successful completion of the course, an average of 70 or above BEFORE weights are added, earns a student five (5) points onto the final course average. For example: Student earns an 80 in Honors 9th Grade Lit/Comp – the report card and transcript will reflect an 85 as the weighted points are added to the final average. Advanced Placement courses add 10 points to the final grade, if a 70 or above has been earned.

Pathway/Plan of Study A student is a pathway completer when he/she concentrates one of these areas: CTAE Advanced Academic (English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies) World Language Fine Arts Each student follows the GaDOE Plan of Study along with the Plan in GCIS

Career Clusters and Pathways CTAE Pathways-Students may earn 3 units of credit in a sequence of CTAE courses in a pathway. These self-selected pathways lead to a college and career readiness certificate. There is a career pathway assessment given at the end of the 3 sequential career pathway courses (usually in the Junior or Senior year). Health and Personal Fitness Health & Personal Fitness Courses Students will participate in the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program as part of their health course. Students who successfully complete the test given at the end of this program will receive an ADAP card. Teenagers wishing to receive a driver’s license must have an ADAP card. Personal Fitness and Health are required courses and are worth ½ credit each. Please note: Some students opt to take 3 years/3 credits worth of JROTC to fulfill this graduation requirement. 16

World Language Courses Taking a World Language course is NOT required for graduation, but students who wish to gain admission to a college/university must complete two (2) units of the same World (foreign) Language. If your student completed the Spanish program in middle school (7th and 8th grades; not 6th), they should make a course request for Spanish II for 9th grade. We NEVER recommend taking a year off between language classes. If they change to French, they must take two years (two units) of French during grades 9-12. Students who did not take Spanish in middle school can start Spanish I or French I in 9th grade or may opt to begin a World Language in 10th Grade. Your student may declare a pathway/Plan of Study in World Language or may select one of the other pathway choices in CTAE, Advanced Academic or Fine Arts areas.

Promotion in HS to Next Grade Students are promoted to the next grade level based on the Cohort Year. Cohort Year 1 = Grade 9 Cohort Year 2 = Grade 10 Cohort Year 3 = Grade 11 Cohort Year 4 = Grade 12 Then, students must have a minimum of credits earned. From 9th to 10th grade-5 credits From 10th to 11th grade-11 credits, From 11th to 12th grade-17 credits

Dual Enrollment A process by which high school students take courses from a state public or private postsecondary institution while still enrolled as a high school student and receive credit both at the high school and at the postsecondary institution. Georgia students in who are enrolled in grades 9-12 can earn high school course credits while taking college courses.

Financial Considerations Required Enrollment Tuition is covered for the student. No mandatory fees for student. Books are paid for as well. Student must be enrolled full-time This can be done by: Combination of high school and Dual Enrollment courses Student must take 4.0 credits worth of courses each semester. Full time Dual Enrollment student at the college (student must have 12 hours and a minimum of 4 college courses which equals between 12-15+ credit hours) Travel time or periods off are approved each semester.

Things to consider…. Maturity level of the student Post-secondary plans of the student Individual career goals and IGP (Individual Graduation Plan) Necessary tests for admission to the postsecondary institution(s) of choice Application and acceptance by the post-secondary institution Different Dual Enrollment programs and the participation requirements for each through individual counseling, as well as through classroom guidance sessions. College admission requirements and application deadlines should be discussed for the different institutions, i.e. USG, TCSG, and independent colleges and universities.

Dual Enrollment Terms Fall Spring Summer Student cannot begin until after the first day of ninth grade year Some schools do not accept ninth grade students into their Dual Enrollment Program. Always check with the high school counselor should you have questions regarding DE.

Summits for Dual Enrollment FY19 EVENT: Dual Enrollment Summit (Spring Semester) LOCATION: Paulding County High School DATE: February 28, 2019 TIME: 6:00 p.m.

What is the Paulding Virtual Academy? The Paulding Virtual Academy will offer students the opportunity to use teacher supported, technology-based courses to earn new high school credit, recover credit, continue coursework or accelerate their progression through high school and into college level courses. What are the requirements to participate at PCCA? Application and requirement information will be finalized during second semester. If you are interested in any of the Career Pathways offered at PCCA, be sure that your middle school counselor knows about your interest as you finalize your Individual Graduation Plan. What are the requirements to participate at PCCA?

Athletics and Eligibility Eligibility refers to a student’s good academic standing, so that the student may participate in athletics and competitive activities. First semester ninth grade students (Cohort Year 1) are eligible first semester. Second semester students must have passed at least 2.5 units of credit for the previous semester.

Special Education Students Special Education students and their parent/guardian participate in all advisement opportunities along with regular education students. Each special education student’s Individualized Education Plan guides course work and graduation requirements as well as the BRIDGE advisement plan.

Georgia Career Information System (GCIS) Career Portfolios Your middle school student has been working on his/her career portfolio since 6th grade using : Georgia Career Information System (GCIS) These tools, which are an essential part of your student’s career portfolio, are used throughout high school as well to help students identify their goals, strengths and to answer: Who I am? Where I am going? How will I get there?

During 9th – 12th Grade and After High School Graduation GAFutures (MyGAfutures Account) Your MyGAfutures GPA HOPE information College Applications in Georgia Scholarships FAFSA and Financial Aid Financial Literacy Dual Enrollment Application to Georgia Student Finance Commission Students will migrate over to continue to develop their career portfolio using GaFutures- which is connected to GCIS. This also helps them to apply to colleges and for financial aid

Career Pathways in CTAE Career Clusters and their Pathways are part of a state supported curriculum that encourages and supports students and families in their educational and career planning through long-term goals, knowledge, experience and resources. Students may earn three (3) units of credit in a sequence of CTAE courses in a Pathway. These self-selected Pathways lead to college readiness and a career readiness certificate. There is a Career Pathway Assessment given at the end of the three (3) sequential Career Pathway courses (usually in the Jr. or Sr. year). Students may use their required Electives courses to complete more than one Pathway during their high school career.

What is the Paulding College and Career Academy? PCCA opens the Fall semester of 2019 Students who attend PCCA graduate with a high school diploma plus have: Dual Enrollment Course Opportunities Work-Based Learning/Apprenticeship Program Courses Complete a CTAE Pathway and related courses

At the bottom of Page 2 (left corner), complete the necessary signatures and dates in the box labeled “8th to 9th Advisement Plan Reviewed by:” You and your student will review the IGP using the MYAP Tool in Infinite Campus during advisement sessions during the coming years and revise the 10, 11, and 12th grade columns on page 1. Parent/Guardian Signature under the ninth grade year also indicates approval for Honors and AP courses on page 1 in Section 2. After you have all of the signatures, tear off Copy 3 for your records. Return the remaining copies and handouts to one of the counselors in the computer lab.

During February the bridge advisement plan information on PAGE 1 is updated in iC under the MYAP Course Plan.

What will happen February 5th? Between 5:30 and 6:30 come to the EPHS gym and pick up your child's IGP folder You can also stop by CTAE, Club and Athletic Tables 6:00 PM-7:00 PM- Presentation for parents in theater, final signing of IGP document and return to your middle school counselor

Submitted Parent Questions: My student has an IEP Submitted Parent Questions: My student has an IEP. Will the school reach out to me about upcoming IEP meetings or do I need to reach out to the school? All IEP and educational records will transfer from the middle school at the end of the school year. The ESEP coordinator from the high school will initiate contact with the parent regarding their student’s IEP. The student will also be assigned a Case Manager as done at the middle school level.

Can students take ASL instead of Spanish and is ASL usually a college accepted course? This course is considered a world language course, however it is not offered in a classroom setting but would have to be done online. You would need to contact the specific college regarding this course
