PHASES OF COMPETITION Pre, In and Post Season Preparation Peaking for Performance Tapering

Pre, In and Post Season Preparation A training plan has a number of different phases of periods. Division into these phases is called PERIODISATION. Periodisation = one phase builds upon the results of the previous phase. 3 phases Preparation Competition Transition

Pre, In and Post Season Preparation Preparation = Pre Season Concentration on the development of fitness and improving skill levels in readiness for competition. General aerobic based training. Towards end may move into periods of strength, power and skill training.

Pre, In and Post Season Preparation Competition = In Season Maintain physical fitness. Gradually refine their skills and tactics so athletes reach top form at the right time = peaking.

Pre, In and Post Season Preparation Transition = Post Season Time for active rest and recovery. 3-5 week period. Athletes maintain physical gains and facilitate recovery of the mind.

Pre, In and Post Season Preparation

Pre, In and Post Season Preparation

Peaking for Performance Peaking = athletes prepare for best possible performance. Exact method depends on athlete and type of sport. E.g.. Weekly team sports compared to 1-2 competitions.

Peaking for Performance Lower volume of training. Increased intensity level with more training completed utilising the anaerobic energy system.

Tapering Athletes involved in a number of competitions, light session immediately follow the competition, with harder sessions mid week. Lighter sessions precede net competition = taper. Tapering method depends on sport and athlete.

Tapering Recovery time needs to be allocated within training sessions to enable relevant energy systems or fuel stores to improve their capacity to cope with the next round of training.
