Rape after the kite tournament Amir betrays his loyal and faithful friend Hassan, symbolising his cowardice Hassan is violently punished because he is 'Hazara' often seen as the servants Amir feels ashamed to be friends with Hassan "But I'm not his friend!... He's my servant"

The phone call Rahim Khan reveals to Amir, all of babas secrets and his true blood connection with Hassan Very significant as it is the major turning point of the novel which leads Amir on to his journey of redemption Amir is compelled to return to Afghanistan to rescue Sohrab Amir transforms from a coward to a hero "There is a way to be good again"

Fight with Assef Amir confronts Assef Sacrifices himself for Sohrab, even although he is in a huge amount of pain Amir proves his father Baba wrong and takes a stand Left with a scar on his lip, symbolising Hassan's hare lip "My body was broken… But I felt healed, healed at last"
